What $4,000 in proactive cancer screening didn’t catch — my free colonoscopy did.
As the co-founder of Bionic Health, I’m a huge believer in proactive, preventative care. I’ve done the full stack of cancer screening: Prenuvo, Galleri, Cologuard, Nucleus whole genome sequencing, advanced bloodwork, you name it.
At 48, the one test I kept postponing was my colonoscopy. After spending $4,000 on cutting-edge cancer screening, I figured I was covered. Plus, let’s be honest — colonoscopy prep isn’t exactly convenient compared to other screening options.
I finally scheduled it, expecting a clean bill of health.
Instead, they found six pre-cancerous polyps. For a first-timer, that’s a lot.
Now I’m on the accelerated plan: retesting every 3 years instead of 5–10. And thanks to me, my kids get to start their colonoscopies at 38. (you’re welcome.)
Colorectal cancer is the #2 cancer killer in the U.S. — but also one of the most preventable. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard. It’s covered by insurance and, unlike many tests, both detects and removes polyps before they become cancer.
This isn’t a knock on advanced screening — I still recommend those tools and I’m glad I used them. But it’s a stark reminder that sometimes the most effective tool is also the oldest, most proven, and covered by insurance.
Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for detecting and preventing colorectal cancer. Yet I know smart, health-optimized friends over 50 who still haven’t done it.
If that’s you: schedule it. Now.
has done more than anyone to raise awareness about the life-saving power of colonoscopy. She’d be disappointed to hear that so many 50+ folks in the Triangle startup community are still dragging their feet. If you’re over 40, it’s time to seriously consider it.
We’ll spend thousands optimizing VO2 max, supplements, and recovery metrics, then skip the one test that’s free, covered by insurance, and could literally save our lives.
Consider this your reminder: book it.
